A heartbreaking incident has rocked the Karaku community in Rafi Local Government Area of Niger State, where a 10-year-old boy, Abubakar Lawal, died after a fight with other children.

The altercation happened on August 11, 2025, while Abubakar and his friend, nine-year-old Hassan Adamu Umar, were returning home from grazing their parents’ sheep. Reports say the two boys were blocked by four other minors — Musa Aliyu (10), Umaru Abdullahi (6), Maryam Abdullahi (10), and Fulaira Jika (4).

During the confrontation, Musa Aliyu allegedly struck both Abubakar and Hassan with a stick, causing serious injuries. They were rushed to the General Hospital in Kagara, where Abubakar was pronounced dead. Hassan is still receiving treatment.

Niger State Police Command spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the incident, describing it as a suspected case of culpable homicide. He said all the minors involved have been brought in for questioning along with their parents.

The case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Minna for further action, while Abubakar’s body has been placed in the hospital morgue for autopsy.

What began as a return home from grazing animals has now left one family grieving and a community in shock.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
