100,000 ISTANBUL RESIDENTS SLEEP OUTDOORS FOLLOWING 6.2-MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE
Following a 6.2-magnitude earthquake near Istanbul, more than 100,000 residents avoided staying indoors overnight due to fears of aftershocks, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya confirmed.
At a press conference on Thursday, April 24, 2025, Yerlikaya stated that around 101,000 people were temporarily housed in mosques, schools, and dormitories across the city. Mobile kitchens and tents were set up to provide meals for those displaced.
The quake, centered in the Marmara Sea just off Istanbul’s coast, struck on Wednesday. By 9:00 a.m. local time (0600 GMT) Thursday, authorities had recorded 266 aftershocks.
Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change Minister Murat Kurum noted that no residential buildings collapsed except for one vacant structure in Fatih district. Meanwhile, Health Minister Kemal Memişoğlu reported 236 injuries in total, with 60 people still hospitalized—mostly for panic-related injuries or jumps from buildings. No fatalities have been confirmed.
