At least 15 farmers and firewood gatherers have been killed in an attack by suspected Boko Haram terrorists in Marte Local Government Area of Borno State.

The victims were reportedly attacked around Ala and Musune wards on Wednesday evening while working on their farms. Police confirmed the incident on Friday, saying 15 people were killed while others remained missing.

Borno State Police Command spokesperson, Nahum Daso, said security agencies were still working to establish the whereabouts of the missing persons and gather more details about the incident.

Local sources said 18 people had gone to the area, with 15 bodies later recovered and buried by community members according to Islamic rites.

The victims were reportedly residents who depended on farming and firewood gathering for their livelihoods.

Amnesty International condemned the attack and called on the Nigerian authorities to strengthen protection for vulnerable communities in the region.

The organisation said the reported targeting of civilians was a serious violation of international humanitarian law and urged authorities to take immediate measures to protect residents.

The latest incident adds to the security challenges facing communities in Borno, where attacks by Boko Haram and other armed groups have continued to affect residents and disrupt livelihoods.
