Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has cautioned residents to be vigilant against politicians making unrealistic promises as the political season ahead of the 2027 general elections begins to intensify.

Describing 2026 as a critical year and a precursor to the next elections, Governor Makinde urged the electorate to exercise discernment as political activities gain momentum.

He delivered the warning on Monday during the annual Interfaith Prayer Session marking the start of the New Year in Ibadan. In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media, Sulaimon Olarenwaju, the governor emphasized the need for citizens to critically assess aspirants for public office.

“As we move closer to 2027, people should be cautious of politicians who will make promises they cannot fulfill,” Makinde said.

Highlighting his administration’s performance, the governor expressed confidence in continuity of governance, noting that a member of his team was well-positioned to take over the state leadership in 2027. He reaffirmed his commitment to the ongoing development of Oyo State and the welfare of its people.

On security, Makinde urged residents to remain alert, stressing that safeguarding lives and property is a shared responsibility.
“I want us to be vigilant about security. In just 12 days this year, we have already lost lives at the Old Oyo National Park. Security is everyone’s responsibility. If you notice anything suspicious, report it to the appropriate authorities,” he said.

Regarding workers’ welfare, the governor noted that his administration had cleared longstanding promotion arrears inherited from previous governments and continued to prioritize timely career progression.
“When we assumed office in 2019, we inherited promotion backlogs dating to 2016. These have been cleared, and promotions are now conducted annually. The 2025 promotion file has been sent to me, and I will sign it today. Those due for promotion can rest assured,” Makinde stated.

He also revealed that a review of emoluments for Heads of Local Government Administration was ongoing, with hopes that the matter would be resolved by the end of January.

Earlier, the Head of Service, Mrs. Olubunmi Oni, commended the governor for consistent people-centered governance, citing improvements in workers’ welfare, regular salary payments, increased monthly gratuity from N1.5 billion to N3 billion, 13th-month salary payments, staff training, and civil service reforms. She also acknowledged the role of labor unions and stakeholders in sustaining industrial harmony.

In goodwill messages, the Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Adebo Ogundoyin, represented by his deputy Muhammed Fadeyi; Chief Judge Justice Iyabo Yerima; and Secretary to the State Government Musibau Babatunde, praised the governor for his support for governance institutions and infrastructure development.

The State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Kayode Martin, said labor unions would resist any regression in workers’ welfare, noting that Makinde had set a benchmark for future administrations. Similarly, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Segun Abatan, expressed appreciation for bonuses and welfare packages, presenting a white horse as a symbolic gesture.

The event was attended by dignitaries, including former governor and Olubadan of Ibadanland Oba Rashidi Ladoja; Deputy Governor Bayo Lawal; traditional rulers; former public office holders; lawmakers; and party leaders.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
