2027: INEC CHAIRMAN SEEKS TRADITIONAL RULERS’ SUPPORT FOR CREDIBLE POLLS
The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called on traditional rulers across Nigeria to support efforts towards conducting free, fair and credible elections in 2027.
The appeal highlights the important role traditional institutions can play in strengthening democracy, promoting peaceful political participation and encouraging public confidence in the electoral process.
Traditional rulers remain influential figures in their communities, with the ability to engage residents, promote dialogue and discourage activities that could undermine peaceful elections. Their involvement is therefore considered valuable in addressing challenges such as voter intimidation, electoral violence, misinformation and political tension.
As preparations for the 2027 general elections gradually gather momentum, INEC is expected to intensify engagement with different stakeholders to improve electoral awareness and encourage citizens to participate in the democratic process.
The commission's call also underscores the need for stronger cooperation between electoral authorities, security agencies, political parties, civil society organisations and community leaders.
Traditional rulers are particularly important at the grassroots level, where their influence can help communicate the importance of peaceful conduct, respect for electoral laws and responsible political engagement.
However, the responsibility for credible elections also rests on INEC's ability to organise transparent polls, ensure effective logistics and maintain public trust in the electoral system.
With the 2027 elections approaching, sustained collaboration among stakeholders will be essential to creating an environment where Nigerians can freely exercise their voting rights and have their choices respected.
