22 ARRESTED AFTER VIOLENT CLASH BETWEEN ILLEGAL MINERS IN NIGER STATE
There was chaos in the M.I. Wushishi Estate area of Minna, Niger State, as a violent clash broke out among illegal miners, leaving several people injured and prompting a swift police response. By the end of the operation, 22 suspects were arrested, with several others fleeing the scene.
The incident occurred around 10:00 a.m. on July 10, according to the Niger State Police Command. Officers from the Maitumbi Division, led by their Divisional Police Officer (DPO), quickly responded after receiving distress calls from residents about the unrest.
Police spokesperson DSP Wasiu Abiodun confirmed the arrests and said the suspects, which include women, are currently being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Minna. He assured the public that efforts are underway to apprehend those who escaped.
In response to the incident, Niger State’s Commissioner for Mineral Resources, Garba Yahaya, visited the scene to assess the situation. Speaking through the ministry’s spokesperson, Dibie Maureen, Yahaya condemned both the illegal mining operations and the violence that erupted.
“This kind of lawlessness is a serious threat to public safety. The government will not tolerate it,” he said.
He also emphasized the state's zero-tolerance policy on illegal mining, warning that anyone caught engaging in such activities will face the full force of the law.
Illegal mining has been a growing concern in several parts of Nigeria, often linked to environmental degradation, loss of government revenue, and security threats. Incidents like this highlight the urgent need for stronger regulation, community awareness, and alternative employment opportunities for vulnerable youths.
As investigations continue, residents are urged to remain calm and report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
