3SC NEVER WON CONTINENTAL CUP UNDER MAKINDE, ORIYOMI HAMZAT FAULTS ADEKANMBI
Popular Ibadan-based media personality Oriyomi Hamzat has faulted claims by Oyo State political figure Adekanmbi concerning Shooting Stars Sports Club’s achievements under Governor Seyi Makinde, insisting that the club has not won a continental title during the governor’s administration.
Hamzat’s comments have added to the debate surrounding the performance of the Ibadan-based football club and the extent to which the Oyo State Government’s support has translated into major sporting achievements.
Shooting Stars, popularly known as 3SC, is one of Nigeria’s historic football clubs, with a strong following in Ibadan and a legacy that includes domestic league success and notable performances in continental competitions.
The club reached the final of the African Cup Winners’ Cup in 1993, losing to Al-Mokawloon Al-Arab of Egypt. It also finished as runner-up in the CAF Champions League in 1984, when it lost to Zamalek of Egypt. These achievements remain significant milestones in the club’s history.
Hamzat’s criticism appears to centre on the distinction between government support for the club and the achievement of major continental honours. While investments in facilities, administration and player welfare can strengthen a team, winning an international title requires consistent performance, effective management and strong competition across several stages.
Under Makinde, the Oyo State Government has continued to support sports development, including activities involving 3SC. However, the club’s supporters have maintained high expectations because of its historical status and the passion it commands among football fans in the state.
The disagreement also highlights the growing role of sports in political discourse in Oyo State, where the performance of prominent institutions can become part of wider discussions about governance and public investment.
For 3SC, the immediate challenge remains translating its rich history and local support into sustained success on the domestic and continental stages. Achieving that ambition will require effective recruitment, stable administration, adequate funding and a long-term sporting strategy.
Hamzat’s remarks have therefore renewed attention on the club’s record and the expectations surrounding its future, particularly among supporters eager to see the Oluyole Warriors return to the top level of African football.
