Babajide Sanwo-Olu has approved the release of 43 inmates from correctional facilities across Lagos State as part of ongoing efforts to reduce overcrowding and advance reforms in the criminal justice system.

The announcement was made by the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro, who explained that the move is aimed at easing congestion in custodial centres while improving correctional infrastructure.

Pedro recalled that 91 inmates were also released in December 2025 under similar arrangements.

He noted that the latest release was carried out under the governor’s constitutional authority, adding that it was executed through the power of prerogative of mercy as provided for in Section 212 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

According to him, the beneficiaries were carefully selected based on recommendations from the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, in line with established legal and administrative procedures.

Pedro added that the initiative underscores the state government’s commitment to justice sector reforms, fairness, and improved living conditions within correctional facilities, particularly by addressing overcrowding challenges.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
