According to research, the quicker you read, the less things you are likely to understand and recall.

As hard as it might seem, there's a way around it. With the tips below, you'll become better.

  1. Try the pointer technique: Research shows using a visual guide (finger/pen) creates ''ocular anchoring,'' reducing eye regression by 37%. Simply trace your reading line with a finger or pen. This physical guide boosts reading speed by 25-30% while improving focus - like training wheels for your visual comprehension.
  2. Avoid going back and forth: When you constantly backtrack while reading, it's often a focus issue. Create distraction-free environments and try timed reading sprints (20-30 minutes). Resist the urge to reread - you'll be surprised how much you retain on the first pass.
  3. Master adaptive reading: Turbo-skim casual texts (like chats/emails) but switch to 'study mode' for complex material. This mental gear-shifting saves 2-3 hours daily while improving retention where it matters most.
  4. Expand Your Vocabulary: Reading can feel slow when you frequently stop to check unfamiliar words. By learning more words, your reading will flow more easily. Make a habit of noting down new terms and reviewing them later. As your vocabulary grows, you’ll need fewer pauses, making your reading faster and more enjoyable.

Practice Speed Reading and Skim Before Reading in Depth: Like any skill, reading quickly takes practice. Try reading a few pages daily, whether it's with your morning coffee or in between tasks. As you keep at it, your brain learns to process words faster without losing understanding.

Also, before tackling a long article or chapter, spend half a minute previewing it. Quickly check the title, section headings, and any bold or italicized words. This mental warm-up helps your brain anticipate what's coming, making the actual reading smoother and more efficient. Speed comes with time. The more you read, the more naturally quick reading will feel.

While speed reading helps you cover material faster, it's not ideal for every situation. True reading efficiency means adjusting your pace based on your purpose.

Remember: The best readers aren't just fast—they're adaptable, matching their reading style to each text's demands.
