60% STUDENT FRAUD CLAIM SHOWS MORAL, SYSTEMIC FAILURE IN NIGERIA — OBI

Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has described Nigeria as facing a serious moral and systemic crisis following claims by EFCC Chairman Olanipekun Olukoyede that about 60% of university students are involved in internet fraud.

In a statement on Wednesday, Obi said if the allegation is accurate, it points to a deeper collapse of values, leadership, and accountability in the country.

He warned that with an estimated 2 to 2.5 million university students in Nigeria, the figure would mean roughly 1.4 million young people may be engaged in fraud.

Obi said the issue should not be treated as only a criminal matter but as evidence of a failing system that appears to reward dishonesty while ignoring integrity.

According to him, young people often reflect what they see from leaders and public institutions, adding that when those in authority face allegations without consequences, it sends the wrong message.

He stressed the need for urgent reforms, accountability, and leadership by example.

Obi added that Nigeria must rebuild a society where honesty, discipline, and hard work are rewarded.

The comments come after the EFCC raised concerns over increasing cybercrime among university students, calling it a growing national security threat.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
