At least 75 people have lost their lives in road accidents across Edo State in the first half of 2025, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

The shocking figures were revealed by the Edo State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Cyril Mathew, during a press briefing on Monday in Benin City.

Mathew said the fatalities occurred in 101 road crashes recorded between January and June this year. Altogether, 903 people were involved in these accidents, with 304 sustaining various degrees of injuries, while 75 unfortunately died.

Breaking down the monthly figures, he disclosed that:

15 died in January

18 in February

14 in March

4 in April

5 in May

19 in June

The FRSC boss attributed the crashes mainly to brake failures, overspeeding, dangerous driving, use of phones while driving, and route violations.

In response to the troubling statistics, Mathew said the FRSC in Edo has intensified its public awareness campaigns across the state. The aim is to instill safer driving habits among motorists and drastically reduce avoidable road crashes.

He also warned drivers against overloading, drunk driving, night travels, using phones while driving, and speeding, stressing that these are major causes of the accidents claiming innocent lives.

Mathew called on stakeholders, including transport unions and community leaders, to join hands with the corps to achieve a future of zero road crashes in Edo State, ensuring the roads are safer for all.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
