The Abia State Police Command has confirmed the death of a yet-to-be-identified man who was electrocuted while attempting to vandalize a transformer at Omuma Road in Aba.

According to the police, the incident was reported on August 19, 2025, prompting officers from the Eziama Police Division to rush to the scene. The man, who had been severely electrocuted, was later evacuated and confirmed dead by a doctor before his body was deposited in a morgue.

In a statement on Thursday, Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chinaka, said investigations have begun into the matter. She also used the opportunity to warn against vandalism, stressing that those caught stealing public infrastructure or buying stolen property are guilty of serious crimes punishable by law.

“Vandalism is among the top incidents recorded in Abia last month. The public must avoid buying stolen equipment and should always demand original receipts before making any purchase,” DSP Chinaka cautioned.

The police reiterated that tampering with electrical installations is not only criminal but also extremely dangerous, as the tragic incident in Aba has once again shown.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
