ABBAS TAJUDEEN: TWO YEARS OF PURPOSEFUL LEGISLATIVE LEADERSHIP
June 13, 2025, marks two remarkable years since Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, Ph.D, GCON, assumed the Speakership of Nigeria’s 10th House of Representatives, following the overwhelming endorsement by 353 of 359 members. Two years on, not only has the confidence in his leadership endured — it has grown stronger, validated by performance, peace, and purpose.
A technocrat-turned-politician with deep roots in academia, Speaker Abbas brought a legacy of intellectual excellence to public office. From pioneering two accounting departments to attending over 40 academic conferences, his career has consistently blended scholarship with service.
In office, Speaker Abbas has continued to receive accolades from prestigious institutions. He delivered convocation lectures at Al-Hikmah University, FUT Minna, and was honoured by NOUN with a Doctor of Business Administration (Honoris Causa), among others. His widely acclaimed lecture at Al-Hikmah University, “Beyond Oil: Exploring Alternative Revenue Potentials for Economic Growth and Sustainable Development in Nigeria”, continues to draw global attention.
Speaker Abbas’ track record in the legislature is unmatched — sponsoring 74 bills in the 9th Assembly (a national record), with 21 signed into law. Under his watch, the 10th House has witnessed unprecedented peace, stability, and inclusiveness, especially on matters affecting women, youth, and children.
He has made symbolic gestures to uplift younger voices — twice relinquishing his seat for teenagers to preside as ‘Shadow Speaker’, reaffirming his commitment to youth empowerment. Speaker Abbas has also attracted widespread praise from civil society and professional bodies alike, including CITN, CIPMN, NIPR, and NIA.
On the international front, Speaker Abbas has championed parliamentary diplomacy, establishing friendship groups across the globe and fostering foreign partnerships that can translate into real investment opportunities for Nigeria.
Through initiatives like the Parliamentary Development Programme in collaboration with UNDP, and the creation of the Programmes Coordination Unit (PCU), Speaker Abbas has institutionalised capacity-building and policy development at the heart of legislative affairs.
A crowning moment came when President Tinubu elevated him to Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON) — a distinction once reserved for the Vice President and Senate President — correcting a historical oversight and solidifying his place in Nigeria’s national hierarchy.
In an era where Nigeria yearns for professionals in politics, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen stands out — not just as a Speaker, but as a statesman whose leadership is driven by quiet diligence, clear vision, and unwavering patriotism.
Indeed, if providence were a person, it would be proud of what Speaker Abbas has made of the opportunity to serve.
