ABDUCTION FEAR: OYO NUT REJECTS SCHOOL RESUMPTION
The Oyo State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) has opposed the resumption of academic activities in affected areas, citing growing fears over the safety of teachers and pupils following recent security incidents.
The union expressed concern over the threat posed by kidnappings and other security challenges, arguing that adequate protection measures must be put in place before schools can safely reopen.
According to union officials, the welfare and security of students, teachers, and non-teaching staff should remain the highest priority in any decision regarding school resumption.
The NUT maintained that returning to classrooms without sufficient security guarantees could expose educational communities to unnecessary risks.
The position comes amid heightened anxiety among parents and residents following reports of abductions and attacks affecting communities in the state.
Union leaders called on government authorities and security agencies to strengthen protective measures around schools and ensure a secure learning environment.
Education stakeholders have also urged authorities to accelerate the implementation of school safety programmes aimed at preventing security breaches.
Analysts note that insecurity continues to pose a major challenge to educational development, particularly in areas vulnerable to criminal activities.
Parents and community leaders have echoed calls for enhanced security, stressing the need to safeguard children’s access to education.
The union reaffirmed its commitment to supporting quality education while insisting that the safety of teachers and students must not be compromised.
