ABIA CONVERTS FREE GREEN SHUTTLE SERVICE TO SUBSIDISED PAID TRANSPORT
The Abia State Government has transitioned its previously free Green Shuttle mass transit service into a paid system, introducing a 50 per cent subsidy on fares to ensure transportation remains affordable for residents.
The Commissioner for Information, Mr. Okey Kanu, announced this on Monday while addressing journalists after the State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti in Umuahia.
Kanu said the new fare structure came into effect on March 1, 2026, explaining that the adjustment was necessary to guarantee the long-term sustainability and efficient operation of the transport programme.
Under the new system, commuters will pay subsidised fares through the Abia Connect Card, a cashless payment card linked to the Abia State Social Identification Number (ABSSIN).
He noted that registration agents have been stationed at major bus terminals and shelters in Umuahia and Aba to assist residents in registering and obtaining the card for easy access to the service.
The commissioner further disclosed that more than 202,000 passengers used the shuttle service between December 24, 2025, and March 8, 2026, when the buses operated largely free of charge.
He added that the introduction of subsidised fares would help sustain the initiative while ensuring that residents continue to benefit from dependable and affordable public transportation across the state.
