ABIA DOCTORS SUSPEND PLANNED STRIKE AS KIDNAPPED SURGEON REGAINS FREEDOM
The Abia State branch of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has suspended its planned indefinite strike following the release of kidnapped orthopaedic surgeon, Dr. Uche Bonaventure Aguocha. The doctor regained his freedom after spending nine days in captivity.
Dr. Aguocha, a former chairman of the NMA in Abia State, was abducted while returning to Umuahia from Imo State. His kidnapping had prompted the association to threaten an indefinite strike over growing concerns about the safety of healthcare workers.
In a statement signed by NMA Chairman Dr. Ezenwa Ezuruike and Secretary Dr. Clement Ifenkoronye, the association expressed gratitude to the Abia and Imo state governments, security agencies, and members of the public for their efforts and support during the ordeal.
While welcoming the surgeon’s release, the NMA condemned the recurring abduction of medical professionals, warning that such incidents threaten healthcare delivery and the morale of doctors working under difficult conditions.
The association called on federal and state authorities to strengthen security around healthcare workers and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
The association said the suspension of the strike takes immediate effect and reaffirmed its commitment to providing healthcare services to residents of Abia State while continuing engagement with authorities on improving the safety of medical personnel.
