The governments of Abia and Imo States have unveiled a joint security taskforce and surveillance operation along the Aba-Owerri expressway, covering the route from Owerrinta in Abia State to Owerri in Imo State.

The initiative comes in response to recent criminal activities on the expressway, including kidnappings, armed robberies, and other security threats.

Ferdinand Ekeoma, Special Adviser to Governor Alex Otti on Media and Publicity, announced the formation of the taskforce.

In his statement, Ekeoma said: “Following a strategic emergency security meeting held on 4th December 2025 at the Imo State Government Owerri House, the Governors of Abia and Imo States, His Excellency Governor Alex Otti and His Excellency Senator Hope Uzodinma, agreed to establish a joint security taskforce comprising soldiers, naval personnel, police officers, DSS operatives, and other government security agencies.

“The taskforce will begin 24-hour patrols along the expressway from 5th December 2025, conducting extensive surveillance in nearby bushes using drones and other advanced security equipment.”

Governor Otti also praised the Imo State government for apprehending the suspects involved in a recent attack on his advance team and other travelers.

Ekeoma added that the two Governors assured citizens and motorists using the road, especially those returning home for Christmas, of their safety, while warning that anyone caught engaging in criminal acts along the expressway will face strict consequences.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
