The Abia State Government has dismissed rumors circulating on social media regarding an impending strike by teachers, asserting that there is no reason for such action. This follows a warning issued by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in Abia, who had set a 14-day ultimatum to the state government, which concludes today.

In a press briefing on Tuesday, Prince Okey Kanu, the Commissioner for Information, clarified that the government is already in discussions with the NUT to address the teachers’ welfare concerns. He confirmed that Elder Goodluck Ubochi, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, is currently engaged with the union to resolve the issues. Kanu acknowledged that some teachers are unhappy about the wage disparities between primary and junior secondary school teachers but reassured the public that the matter is being handled.

He further condemned the spread of fake news, stating that some of the rumors aimed at misrepresenting the Governor’s statements are intended to create division. Kanu emphasized that while not all concerns have been resolved, the state government is committed to improving the welfare of its workers and has already made significant progress.

“The state government remains dedicated to the welfare of its workers, and while we acknowledge there are still issues to be addressed, we have made significant strides,” Kanu said.

Additionally, Kanu took the opportunity to highlight the administration’s achievements over the past 23 months, focusing on advancements in education, healthcare, and infrastructure. He pointed out that the second phase of the teacher training program had been completed, benefiting 2,300 teachers who are now equipped with modern, competency-based teaching skills.

In the healthcare sector, the Abia State College of Health Sciences and Management Technology received accreditation for several programs, including Community Health Technology and Public Health Technology. Furthermore, the Ministry of Power and Public Utilities has completed a solar power project and a computer-based training center in Isialangwa South, marking a significant contribution to rural development.

Looking ahead, Kanu announced the Abia State Start-Up Forum, scheduled for Thursday in Umuahia. The forum, in collaboration with the German Organisation for International Cooperation, will serve as a platform for discussions on promoting technology start-ups and innovation in the state.

Despite the ongoing challenges, Kanu reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to delivering on its promises. He noted that Abians have already seen tangible results from the administration’s efforts to drive progress across key sectors.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
