ABIA, US-BASED DOCTORS TO HOST FREE MEDICAL MISSION
The Abia State Government has announced a free medical outreach in partnership with the Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas, scheduled to run from April 13 to April 17, 2026.
The Commissioner for Health, Enoch Uche, disclosed that about 25 doctors from the United States will participate, offering free surgeries and consultations alongside local health professionals.
He explained that the initiative, directed by Governor Alex Otti, follows the success of a similar mission held two years ago and is aimed at improving access to quality and affordable healthcare.
According to him, the programme will begin with the arrival of the medical team on April 13, while full medical activities will commence on April 14.
The outreach will take place at Aba General Hospital and the Abia State Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Centre in Umuahia, with eye-related treatments handled at the Specialist Hospital and general surgeries at Aba General Hospital.
Uche noted that the state targets at least 1,500 consultations and about 100 surgeries during the exercise.
The initiative will also include sexual and reproductive health education for youths and training for about 80 health workers on basic life support.
The Director-General of the Abia State AIDS Control Agency, Uloaku Ukaegbu, said preparations had been ongoing for months, with screenings and necessary medical investigations already underway.
She added that the programme would provide preventive services and health education, especially for young people.
The government also announced plans to roll out rural emergency medical services, including ambulance deployment, as part of efforts to reduce maternal mortality across the state.
