ADC DEMANDS IMMEDIATE RELEASE OR ARRAIGNMENT OF EL-RUFAI
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called for the immediate release of Mallam Nasir El-Rufai or his prompt arraignment before a court of competent jurisdiction.
The party cautioned that any disregard for constitutional rights could undermine Nigeria’s democratic foundations. This position was made known in a statement issued on Wednesday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi.
“The African Democratic Congress demands the immediate release of Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, or his immediate arraignment in a court of competent jurisdiction—nothing more, nothing less,” the statement read.
The ADC also criticized the administration of President Bola Tinubu, arguing that the handling of the situation raises serious concerns about adherence to the rule of law and respect for human rights.
The party questioned the implications for governance, particularly as the administration seeks renewed public support, asking what would become of the rule of law and human rights if electoral considerations were no longer at stake.
Describing the development as “a stain on the conscience of our democracy” and “a dangerous descent into lawlessness,” the ADC stressed that freedom is a fundamental constitutional right, not a privilege subject to executive discretion.
“Freedom is not a privilege granted at the pleasure of the executive branch; it is a right guaranteed by the Constitution,” the statement added.
The party further urged President Tinubu to demonstrate his commitment to constitutional governance, warning of the consequences of any deviation.
“If the Constitution is to be treated as optional, Nigerians deserve clarity. However, if the President remains committed to the rule of law, then that commitment must be demonstrated through decisive action,” the statement said.
Additionally, the ADC called on all relevant state authorities, including the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, the leadership of the ICPC, and other involved agencies, to act in full compliance with constitutional provisions.
