ADEBAYO: BETTER TO STAY OUT OF GOVERNMENT THAN TO BETRAY NIGERIANS

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has explained its decision to withdraw from coalition talks aimed at challenging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Prince Adewole Adebayo, SDP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, said the discussions fell through due to concerns over the credibility, ideology, and integrity of some opposition figures.

Speaking to journalists on Sunday, Adebayo emphasized that the SDP is not opposed to coalition politics but would not align with individuals whose records conflict with the party’s values.

He noted that opposing President Tinubu alone is insufficient reason to form a political alliance. Several politicians who sought to join the coalition were rejected after internal screening, with some not even granted interviews.

Adebayo accused certain opposition figures of attempting to exploit public dissatisfaction with the current administration without offering credible alternatives. He warned that replacing the government with individuals who are “worse” would not serve Nigerians, stressing that the SDP would not support coalitions driven by opportunism or personal ambition.

He also criticized politicians facing corruption allegations who are positioning themselves as alternatives to the ruling party, arguing that individuals with questionable records lack the moral authority to lead.

According to Adebayo, any viable coalition must be grounded in shared ideology, accountability, and a clear plan to tackle Nigeria’s challenges. Politicians seeking alliances must first acknowledge their role in the country’s current issues before presenting themselves as agents of change.

Adebayo concluded that the SDP would rather remain out of power than join a coalition that compromises its principles or betrays public trust.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
