ADELEKE CAUTIONS VOTERS, DOUBTS APC’S FREE AND FAIR ELECTION PLEDGE IN OSUN

Governor of Ademola Adeleke has cautioned residents of Osun State to remain alert as preparations intensify for the August 15 governorship election, warning against any attempt to undermine the credibility of the poll.

The governor’s remarks came in response to assurances from the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Oyebamiji, and the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, who recently pledged support for a free and fair electoral process in the state.

In a statement released on Saturday in Osogbo by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Adeleke said the APC leaders’ comments appeared to be an attempt to distance themselves from earlier remarks and social media posts suggesting that federal influence could determine the outcome of the election.

According to the governor, the opposition’s recent assurances should not lessen the vigilance of voters across the state as the election approaches.

“The recent statements by opposition figures should not reduce the alertness of residents and voters across the state as preparations continue for the August governorship contest,” Adeleke said.

He questioned what prompted the sudden change in tone from the APC candidate and his supporters, urging the public to approach such assurances with caution in light of previous comments that appeared to suggest a determination to secure victory regardless of the electorate’s decision.

Adeleke further called on individuals linked to the earlier remarks to apologise to the people of Osun for what he described as threats to override the democratic will of voters.

The governor also alleged that some opposition campaign operatives had circulated posts hinting at the possible use of federal authority to influence the election, noting that such claims had generated anxiety among residents and political stakeholders.

“What has changed that the APC candidate now emphasises the need for a free and fair election? Why is the minister repeating the same message after earlier signals suggested otherwise?” he asked.

Adeleke maintained that attempts to retract previous comments do not eliminate concerns about potential interference in the electoral process.

He therefore urged the opposition to demonstrate genuine respect for democratic principles by distancing itself from any conduct capable of undermining the credibility of the election.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
