AFCON 2025: UNCERTAINTY GROWS AS CHELLE DELAYS NAMING SUPER EAGLES CAPTAIN
With just days remaining before the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations kicks off, the Super Eagles have yet to announce their new captain.
This comes after the retirements of William Troost-Ekong and Ahmed Musa ahead of the tournament.
Troost-Ekong was the first to step down, making his decision known even before the provisional 54-man squad was reduced to 28 players. The Al-Kholood defender left the national team amid widespread applause.
On Wednesday, Musa confirmed his retirement, putting to rest speculation about a possible return. Musa holds the record as Nigeria’s most-capped player with 111 appearances and is the only Nigerian to have scored in two different World Cups.
Reports suggest that head coach Eric Chelle may have chosen Wilfred Ndidi as the next Super Eagles captain, with Moses Simon and Alex Iwobi set to serve as his deputies.
It is still uncertain whether talismanic striker Victor Osimhen will join the leadership group.
