AFRICAN UNION TEAM REVIEWS INEC’S READINESS FOR NIGERIA’S 2027 POLLS

An African Union delegation has visited the Independent National Electoral Commission to assess Nigeria’s level of preparedness for the 2027 general elections. The engagement is part of efforts by the continental body to monitor electoral developments in Nigeria and strengthen cooperation with relevant institutions ahead of the polls.

The delegation held discussions with INEC officials on preparations for the elections, including the commission’s planning process, electoral logistics and measures being put in place to ensure a credible exercise. The visit also provided an opportunity for the AU team to gain a clearer understanding of the challenges that could affect the organisation and conduct of the elections.

INEC has continued preparations for the 2027 elections, which are expected to involve millions of voters across the country and the deployment of personnel and materials to thousands of polling units. The commission has also been engaging political parties, civil society groups and other stakeholders as it works towards meeting the timetable and requirements for the elections.

The AU’s interest in Nigeria’s electoral preparations reflects the country’s importance to democratic stability in Africa. Nigeria is the continent’s most populous country and one of its largest democracies, meaning developments around its elections often attract attention from regional and international organisations. The assessment is therefore expected to help the AU understand the level of preparedness while identifying areas where further support or engagement may be required.

With the 2027 elections drawing closer, electoral authorities and other stakeholders are expected to intensify preparations to address logistical, security and administrative concerns. The AU delegation’s engagement with INEC is expected to contribute to wider efforts aimed at ensuring that the elections are conducted peacefully, transparently and in line with democratic standards.
