AFTER SIX MONTHS IN CHARGE, IBAS RETURNS POWER TO GOVERNOR FUBARA
The Sole Administrator of Rivers State, Rear Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, has formally handed over to the reinstated governor, Siminalayi Fubara.
In his final statewide broadcast, Ibas called on Rivers people to give their full support to Fubara as he resumes leadership of the state.
Governor Fubara had been suspended six months ago by President Bola Tinubu, who declared a state of emergency in Rivers. On Tuesday, the president lifted the emergency rule and reinstated him.
Addressing the people, Ibas said:
“My dear citizens of Rivers State, it is with gratitude in my heart and humility in my spirit that I address you today for the final time as administrator of our beloved state.
“Six months ago, President Tinubu entrusted me with the solemn duty of steering Rivers through an extraordinary period in its history. Today, I can say with conviction that by the grace of God and through our collective efforts, the mandate has been fulfilled.
“Law and order have been restored, local government elections have been conducted, and elected chairmen now serve in office. Statutory boards and commissions have been reconstituted, and the state budget has been passed by the National Assembly, providing a legitimate framework for governance. These milestones reflect the resilience of a people determined never to let their state slip into paralysis.
“One of the enduring lessons of this season is that unchecked power can cripple institutions, while rivalry without dialogue poses a threat to democracy.
“As I reflect on this assignment, I do so with deep appreciation. I have met dedicated men and women across the state bureaucracy and benefited from the wise counsel of statesmen who spoke truth at all times.
“Now, as I hand back the reins of leadership to Governor Fubara, I do so with confidence and respect. I urge all Rivers people to support him wholeheartedly because leadership and followership is a shared responsibility.
“No matter how competent or clear a vision may be, it can only be realized with the active support of citizens. For me, this marks the close of another chapter in a life devoted to service at sea, in diplomacy, and now in governance.”
