AHEAD OF 2027 ELECTIONS, OSUNTOKUN URGES NIGERIANS TO HOLD INEC ACCOUNTABLE

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, former Presidential Political Adviser, Mr. Akin Osuntokun, has called on Nigerians to demand accountability from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Osuntokun, who previously served as Director-General of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council and is now a prominent figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), made the appeal on Friday in Lagos.

His remarks came in the wake of the recently signed Electoral Act (Amendment) 2026 and amid controversies over the absence of a provision requiring the ‘real-time’ electronic transmission of election results.

Reacting to the law, Osuntokun said Nigerians must take primary responsibility for safeguarding the integrity of the electoral process.

“Honestly, I am a bit confused about the interpretation of this so-called Amended Electoral Act. I don’t know how much difference there is between the earlier controversial copy and the one the President has signed,” he stated.

He emphasized that, beyond debates over the law’s content, citizens must remain vigilant and insist on transparency from electoral authorities.

“Whatever the case, at the end of the day, it is up to Nigerians to hold INEC to account,” Osuntokun added.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
