AKWA IBOM CHIEF JUDGE ORDERS RELEASE OF 100 INMATES
The Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State has ordered the release of 100 inmates from correctional facilities across the state as part of efforts to decongest prisons.
The release followed a review of inmates’ cases during a special visit to correctional centres in the state.
Officials explained that many of the beneficiaries were granted freedom on compassionate grounds, including those with minor offences, prolonged detention without trial, or health challenges.
Authorities said the exercise was carried out in collaboration with the Nigerian Correctional Service.
Legal practitioners and civil society organisations have welcomed the decision, noting that it will help reduce congestion in correctional facilities and promote justice for inmates awaiting trial.
