AKWA IBOM YOUTHS PROTEST CONSENSUS SENATE TICKET, DEMAND OPEN PRIMARIES

Aggrieved youths from Ikot Abasi Federal Constituency in Akwa Ibom State have protested against an alleged move by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to impose a consensus candidate for the Akwa Ibom South Senatorial District.

The protesters, drawn from Mkpat Enin, Eastern Obolo, and Ikot Abasi Local Government Areas, gathered at the Ikot Abasi Council Headquarters, demanding open primaries and a transparent process ahead of party nominations.

They insisted that the emergence of a Senate candidate must be based on fairness, equity, and competitiveness rather than backdoor arrangements.

The current senator representing the district, Ekong Sampson, is seeking a second term and has the backing of some stakeholders who argue for continuity and experience.

However, the youths rejected any form of automatic ticket, stressing that leadership should be determined through a credible democratic process.

Speaking during the protest, youth leader Ayang Richard warned that any attempt to impose a candidate would be strongly resisted, noting that the constituency has capable individuals who can contest and represent the district effectively.

The demonstrators carried placards calling for transparency and inclusiveness, with messages emphasising their right to choose their leaders and opposing what they described as the imposition of a non-performing candidate.

Another speaker, Friday Jack, criticised the alleged marginalisation of youths and urged stakeholders to unite in rejecting automatic tickets, describing such a move as detrimental to the party’s credibility.

Despite their grievances, the youths reaffirmed support for Bola Tinubu, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
