Defending French Open champion Carlos Alcaraz has announced he will miss this year’s Roland Garros and the Italian Open as he recovers from a right wrist injury.

The Spanish tennis star confirmed the decision on Friday after medical tests revealed the extent of the injury sustained during the Barcelona Open.

Alcaraz said the decision was made in consultation with his team, describing it as a precautionary step to avoid worsening the injury.

“We have decided that the most prudent thing to do is to be cautious and not participate in Rome or Roland Garros,” he said.

He added that the current situation is difficult but expressed confidence that he will return stronger once fully recovered.

Alcaraz picked up the injury during his opening match at the Barcelona Open last week, where he was forced to withdraw after initially competing.

The 22-year-old also pulled out of the Madrid Masters on April 17 as concerns over his fitness increased.

He said his recovery will now be closely monitored before a decision is made on his return to competition.

Alcaraz has enjoyed a strong season so far, with a 22–3 record and a title win in Doha earlier in the year.

The world number two lost his top ranking after a defeat to Jannik Sinner in the Monte Carlo Masters final.

He had won the French Open in 2024 and 2025, making him one of the dominant players on clay in recent seasons.

Alcaraz admitted that protecting his long-term career was the priority, even if it meant missing major tournaments.

“I’d rather come back a bit later but in great shape than risk making this injury worse,” he said earlier this week.

His absence opens up the field at Roland Garros, with rivals expected to take advantage of the defending champion’s withdrawal.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
