Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Industries Limited, has announced a ₦15 billion donation to Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology in Wudil, Kano State. The announcement was made during the university’s fifth convocation ceremony, where he was also reinstated as the Chancellor. The financial commitment forms part of a five-year development plan aimed at strengthening the university's academic and infrastructural capacity.

According to Dangote, the donation will be directed towards several key projects, including the construction of additional student hostels, a state-of-the-art engineering laboratory, and a modern computer lab with 24-hour internet access for students. A mini solar power plant will also be installed to support uninterrupted electricity supply, and a new Senate building will be constructed to serve as the administrative headquarters of the institution.

As part of efforts to encourage academic excellence, Dangote pledged employment opportunities for outstanding graduates in engineering and related disciplines at various arms of the Dangote Group, including the refinery, petrochemical plant, and cement production facilities.

He emphasized the importance of private sector support in advancing public education, noting that the financial strain on government institutions is significant. Through the Aliko Dangote Foundation, the university’s electricity bills have already been covered to ease its financial challenges.

Speaking at the event, Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf praised Dangote’s continued commitment to the advancement of education and national development. He described Dangote as a forward-thinking industrialist whose contributions have made a lasting impact.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Musa Tukur Yakasa, shared that more than 18,000 students had graduated from the institution over the past ten years. He also highlighted the university's growing academic profile, citing a digital model for measuring deforestation density developed by one of its graduates, Mahmoud Mubarak, as a recent example of innovation.

During the ceremony, several prominent figures were awarded honorary doctorate degrees. These included businessman Arthur Eze, aviation tycoon Alhaji Dahiru Barau Mangal, legal expert Ahmad Adeniyi Raji, and Al-Mustapha Ado, founder of Amasco Oil.

The convocation event underscored the university’s ongoing progress and the growing role of private philanthropy in supporting higher education in Nigeria.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
