ANAMBRA JSS STUDENTS TO LEARN ROBOTICS, TRADE SKILLS, OTHERS

The Anambra State Government has introduced 15 entrepreneurial and practical subjects into Junior Secondary Schools across the state as part of efforts to equip students with hands-on skills and an entrepreneurial mindset.

 

The newly introduced subjects include Solar Installation, Garment Making, GSM Repairs, Agriculture and Processing, Plumbing, Tiling, POP Installation, Event Management, Bakery, Hairstyling, Make-up, Interior Design, CCTV and Intercom Installation, Digital Literacy, IT and Robotics, among others.

 

Speaking during the rollout of the programme at Igwebuike Grammar School, Awka, on Friday, the Chairman of the Post-Primary Schools Service Commission, Prof. Nkechi Ikediugwu, said the initiative was designed to move education beyond theory and examinations to practical value creation.

 

Ikediugwu explained that the programme aims to prepare students not only to become job seekers in the future but also job creators who can contribute meaningfully to the economic development of Anambra State and Nigeria at large.

 

“In today’s rapidly changing world, education must go beyond theory and examinations to equip students with practical skills, creativity, innovation, and an entrepreneurial mindset,” she said.

 

“The goal is to prepare learners not just to seek jobs, but to create value, generate employment, and contribute meaningfully to the economic development of the state and the country.

 

“The introduction of these subjects is a deliberate step to boost the practical skills and entrepreneurial capacity of our Junior Secondary School students. These subjects are largely practical-based.”

 

She added that traditional academic instruction alone was no longer sufficient to prepare young people for the realities of the modern world, stressing that the initiative would help position students for future economic independence.

 

Also speaking at the event, a staff member of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Cyril Nwuche, said the introduction of entrepreneurial subjects had placed Anambra State on the path to economic and social transformation.

 

Delivering a lecture titled “Building entrepreneurial secondary schools: Why every school needs an entrepreneurship club,” Nwuche noted that practical learning initiatives were critical in preparing students for life beyond the classroom.

 

“This practical learning initiative is on the path to transform Anambra State economically and socially, as traditional academic instruction is no longer sufficient to prepare children for the future,” he said.

 

Meanwhile, Punch Online recalled that in October 2025, the Anambra State Government announced the recruitment of 8,115 teachers as part of a broader plan to revitalise public education in the state.

 

The Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Chiamaka Nnake, said the recruitment drive was part of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s strategy to improve learning outcomes, address teacher shortages, and ensure access to quality education.

 

“We’re just 42 months in office, and we have recruited 8,115 teachers in all our public schools. It was an open recruitment process with applicants from across the country,” Nnake said.
