ANAMBRA STILL SERVICING OLD DEBTS, COMMISSIONER SAY
The Anambra State Government is still repaying debts incurred by previous administrations, including those of former governors Peter Obi and Willie Obiano, the state Commissioner for Finance, Christian Madubuko, has said.
Madubuko said the financial obligations inherited from past governments remained part of the state’s current debt burden. He explained that the repayment of the debts has continued alongside the government’s responsibility to fund ongoing projects and meet other financial commitments.
The commissioner noted that the state’s finances must be managed carefully to ensure that debt servicing does not prevent the government from providing essential services and executing development projects. He said the administration was working to maintain financial discipline while meeting obligations inherited from previous governments.
He also stressed the need for transparency in the management of public funds, saying residents should understand the financial commitments facing the state. According to him, properly managing the debt profile is important to maintaining the state’s economic stability and ensuring that available resources are directed towards development.
The disclosure comes amid continued political debate over the financial records of successive administrations in Anambra. The state government maintained that inherited debts remain a responsibility that cannot simply be ignored, as repayment must continue while the government pursues its own development agenda.
