ANGRY MOB SETS BRT BUS ABLAZE FOLLOWING FATAL COLLISION WITH MOTORCYCLIST IN OGOLONTO, IKORODU
Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority laments destruction of public infrastructure as law enforcement operatives intervene to rescue driver from irate crowd
An angry mob set a High Capacity Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) vehicle on fire after it collided with and killed a commercial motorcyclist at the Ogolonto Bus Stop along the Ikorodu corridor in Lagos State.
The fatal accident occurred along the dedicated BRT corridor when the commercial motorcyclist, who was riding alone, collided with the incoming transit bus.
Outrage among eyewitnesses and bystanders quickly escalated into violence, with members of the mob attacking the BRT driver before setting the multi-million naira state-owned passenger bus ablaze.
Personnel from the Nigeria Police Force and the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC) arrived at the scene, managing to rescue the bus driver and his assistant from the crowd, preventing further harm.
Reacting to the incident, officials from the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) condemned the destruction of public transit infrastructure, pointing out that the motorcyclist was operating illegally within the restricted BRT lane.
Firefighters and traffic management personnel were subsequently deployed to extinguish the inferno and clear the burnt wreckage, restoring vehicular movement along the busy highway while police investigations into the crash and arson continue.
