APC CHAIRMAN DECLARES FUBARA PARTY LEADER IN RIVERS, BACKS HIM FOR SECOND TERM BID
The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has declared Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara as the party’s leader in the state, while expressing support for his ambition to secure a second term in office.
The declaration signals a major development in the political landscape of Rivers State as the APC strengthens its position ahead of the 2027 general elections. It also highlights the growing political realignment surrounding Fubara, whose relationship with key political figures in the state has attracted national attention.
By recognising Fubara as the party’s leader in Rivers, the APC chairman has reinforced the governor’s position within the party’s structure and indicated that his leadership would play a central role in coordinating party affairs and mobilising support across the state.
The backing for a second term is also expected to influence discussions around the party’s choice of candidates for the 2027 governorship election. However, the eventual emergence of a candidate will depend on the party’s internal procedures and applicable electoral requirements.
Fubara’s political journey has been marked by significant tensions within Rivers State, particularly over control of the state’s political structure and the relationship between the executive and other political stakeholders. These disputes have contributed to shifting alliances and heightened political competition.
The APC’s latest position could strengthen the governor’s efforts to consolidate his support base, attract additional political allies and build a stronger organisation ahead of the next election cycle.
Rivers State remains strategically important because of its economic significance, particularly its role in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry. Political developments in the state therefore carry implications beyond local governance, attracting attention from national political parties and stakeholders.
As preparations for 2027 gather momentum, the APC will face the task of maintaining unity among its members while building an effective campaign structure. Whether the party’s endorsement translates into a successful second-term bid will ultimately depend on internal party decisions, electoral rules and the response of Rivers voters.
