A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, has urged critics and opposition politicians to stop making derogatory remarks about Nigeria and the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Speaking with journalists on Sunday in Osogbo, the former lawmaker cautioned that while freedom of speech is guaranteed by the constitution, it should not be abused to insult the country or its leadership.

Oyintiloye described the habit of ridiculing Nigeria both at home and abroad as unpatriotic, warning that it damages the nation’s global image.

“Nigeria’s global image is suffering negative effects due to unguided and unsubstantiated allegations by critics and members of the opposition against Tinubu’s administration,” he said.

He acknowledged that the country is facing serious challenges but stressed that these should be addressed respectfully, with constructive criticism and decorum. According to him, leaders must be accorded dignity since they represent the nation before the world.

Oyintiloye also warned Nigerians abroad against disparaging the country for political reasons, noting that such remarks could have personal consequences in the future.

“The way we portray our country and its leadership is a reflection of how we are treated around the world. The Internet never forgets, and those making negative remarks may one day become victims of their own words,” he cautioned.

He encouraged Nigerians to emulate the patriotic spirit of Americans who, regardless of their circumstances, often declare “God Bless America.”

Oyintiloye lamented that some Nigerians abroad face harassment and investigations partly due to damaging statements made by fellow citizens. He, therefore, appealed to both critics and opposition members to look beyond politics and join hands in building the nation.

Expressing optimism, he concluded:

“No matter our current challenges, we will overcome. Soon, we will all be proud to be called Nigerians anywhere in the world.”

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
