APC DENIES POLITICAL MOTIVE BEHIND DEATHS OF LAGOS FEMALE COUNCILLORS
The Lagos State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has refuted claims suggesting that the recent deaths of two female councillors were politically motivated, describing such narratives as baseless and insensitive.
The two deceased councillors — Oluwakemi Rufai of Ward C1, Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area, and Zainab Shotayo, the sole female councillor in Odiolowo-Ojuwoye Local Council Development Area, Ilupeju — both passed away within the same week, just weeks after taking office.
Their sudden deaths stirred public concern, with some voices alleging a possible political link.
In response, APC spokesperson in Lagos, Seye Oladejo, called on the public to desist from spreading unfounded rumours and misinformation.
“They were reportedly unwell. There is no political connection whatsoever. Such claims are both surprising and demeaning,” he said. “Death is a human reality that can occur at any time, and no profession or sector is exempt.”
Oladejo further emphasised the party’s commitment to promoting women's participation in governance.
“Our women are actively represented across various positions within our government. There is a deliberate strategy to allocate a reasonable number of seats to women at all levels,” he stated. “To suggest that our party is working against women is completely unfounded.”
He added that the administration remains supportive of gender inclusivity and condemned attempts to politicize the unfortunate losses.
“It’s disheartening to hear such insinuations. If these ideas are being pushed from any quarter, they are both unfair and inhumane,” he said.
