ARCON PROBES 9MOBILE OVER ALLEGED N1 BILLION ADVERTISING DEBT
The Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) has launched an investigation into telecommunications provider 9mobile over an alleged N1 billion unpaid advertising debt, following formal complaints from key industry players.
According to a press release issued on Friday by ARCON’s Director-General, Olalekan Fadolapo, the petitions were submitted by members of the Advertisers Association of Nigeria (ADVAN) against Emerging Markets Telecommunications Services Limited, the company operating as 9mobile.
ARCON alleged that 9mobile continues to engage new advertising agencies while still owing several others for previous campaigns.
“It was further alleged that despite its unresolved financial obligations to some agencies, 9mobile has proceeded to commission new firms for advertising services, leaving the affected agencies in a difficult position,” the council stated.
The regulatory body said it will scrutinize the transfer of the company’s advertising account to new agencies, to verify whether standard disengagement procedures were followed and to assess any potential ethical violations.
ARCON emphasized that advertising debts often affect not only agencies but also media organizations and third-party vendors, leading to broader financial disruptions within the industry.
Labeling the matter as a form of “economic sabotage,” ARCON stated that it would collaborate with anti-corruption and government enforcement agencies to ensure a thorough investigation and facilitate debt recovery.
The council also reiterated that the industry’s standard payment window remains 45 days and cautioned advertisers that it will take decisive action against non-compliance, unfair business practices, and the violation of intellectual property rights.
