As part of activities marking the 2025 Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL), the Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s unwavering dedication to protecting the nation's citizens and sustaining democracy.

Speaking during a press briefing in Abuja on Wednesday, Oluyede said this year’s celebration—scheduled for July 6, 2025—offers the army a platform to highlight its achievements, honour fallen heroes, and engage with civil society.

The event commemorates the establishment of the Nigerian Army and the first gunshot fired in Garkem, Cross River State, which signified the start of the Nigerian Civil War. The inaugural Army Day was held in 1978.

The theme for the 2025 celebration is:
“Developing the Soldier First Concept: Imperative for Nigerian Army’s Transformation Drive.”

According to the COAS, the Nigerian Army remains resolute in countering terrorism and addressing internal security threats that challenge the country's peace and stability.

“The Nigerian Army has risen to the occasion to deny terrorists the opportunity to disrupt our socio-cultural heritage or undermine our sovereignty,” he said.

Oluyede emphasized ongoing efforts to transform the army through research, innovation, civil-military relations, and soldier-focused reforms.

“We are committed to enhancing the welfare and capacity of our soldiers as part of our transformation agenda,” he added.

Highlights of Army Day Activities:

Friday, July 4: Commissioning of civil-military projects in Kaduna, free medical outreach, charity events by NAOWA, and public speaking engagements at schools.

Saturday, July 5: A lecture at the Nigerian Defence Academy on national security topics, followed by the COAS Annual Literary Competition awards and a Gala Night.

Sunday, July 6: The grand finale featuring a military parade, equipment display, and commendation awards to distinguished personnel.
