ARMY NEUTRALISES THREE SUSPECTED KIDNAPPERS IN BENUE’S UKUM LGA
Troops from Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) have achieved a significant breakthrough in the fight against insecurity by killing three suspected criminals during a coordinated operation in the Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State.
According to a statement released on Friday by the acting OPWS Media Information Officer, Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu, the suspects were part of a notorious syndicate responsible for recurring kidnappings and violent attacks across Ukum LGA.
The operation began when troops, in collaboration with other security agencies, foiled an ambush set up by the criminals, who had established an illegal roadblock along the Aturuku–Wembe–Ayati village route in the Borkyo Council Ward. Upon engagement, the soldiers entered into a decisive gun battle, resulting in the deaths of three suspects, while others managed to escape into the surrounding bushes.
Lieutenant Zubairu reported that initial investigations confirmed the identities of the deceased suspects: Sughter Abelebe and Sughnen Abelebe from Ugbaam Council Ward, along with a third suspect from Tse Kpeakaa in the Kundav Council Ward. Community members later identified all three individuals.
Security sources have also linked this group to a well-known bandit kingpin operating in the Shitile area of Katsina-Ala LGA, as well as to recent kidnapping incidents near the Zaki-Biam yam market.
Troops recovered two motorcycles from the scene, and a search continues for the fleeing accomplices.
Major General Moses Gara, OPWS Force Commander, commended the collaboration among security forces and praised the troops for their professionalism and courage. He encouraged them to maintain their momentum, intensify intelligence-led operations, and reinforce security in vulnerable communities.
He reaffirmed the commitment of OPWS to protect lives, support civil authorities, and restore peace throughout the joint operations area.
This latest success contributes to ongoing efforts to combat banditry and criminal activities in the troubled Sankera axis, which has been a major hotspot for insecurity in the state.
