ARMY WARNS PUBLIC OVER FAKE SOCIAL MEDIA ACCOUNTS IMPERSONATING TOP GENERALS

The Nigerian Army has raised the alarm over the increasing number of fake social media accounts impersonating its senior officers.

In a statement issued on Friday, the Army warned Nigerians to be cautious of fraudsters creating accounts on Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and WhatsApp using the names and photos of top generals.

These impostors are reportedly contacting individuals, demanding money, and making false promises. The Army made it clear that no genuine senior officer will ask for financial assistance or personal details from members of the public through social media.

The statement reads in part: “The Nigerian Army wishes to alert the general public that any account requesting money or favours in the name of any senior officer is fake and should be ignored.”

The Army urged citizens to verify any account claiming to belong to military personnel before responding. It also encouraged people to report suspicious accounts to the nearest military formation or the Nigerian Army Cyber Warfare Command.

This warning comes as online scams using the identities of prominent Nigerians continue to rise, leaving many victims poorer. The Army stressed that official communication from the military will only come through verified and official channels.

Members of the public have been advised to remain vigilant and avoid sharing sensitive personal or financial information with unverified contacts online.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
