ARTETA HAILS REFEREE’S ‘BRAVE’ VAR DECISION AFTER ARSENAL’S DRAMATIC WIN OVER WEST HAM
Mikel Arteta has praised referee Chris Kavanagh for what he described as a “very brave call” after Arsenal survived late controversy to secure a tense 1-0 victory over West Ham United in the Premier League title race.
Arsenal appeared on course for a vital three points after Leandro Trossard fired home a late winner to send the Emirates Stadium into celebration mode.
But the drama exploded deep into stoppage time when Callum Wilson thought he had rescued a dramatic equaliser for West Ham during a frantic goalmouth scramble in the 95th minute.
The goal initially stood before VAR official Darren England advised Kavanagh to review the incident on the pitchside monitor.
Following several replays, the referee eventually ruled out the goal after judging that West Ham defender Pablo had fouled Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya inside the crowded penalty area.
According to the officials, Pablo’s arm across Raya’s throat prevented the goalkeeper from making a proper challenge for the ball, leading to the controversial decision that ultimately preserved Arsenal’s narrow victory.
The decision immediately sparked debate among fans and pundits, with social media flooded by reactions over whether the contact on Raya was enough to disallow the goal.
Despite the controversy, Arteta strongly defended the match officials and insisted the call required courage given the pressure and intensity of the moment.
The Arsenal manager admitted it was a difficult situation but praised the refereeing team for sticking to what they believed was the correct decision.
The result gives Arsenal another massive boost in the Premier League title race as the Gunners continue their push for a historic league triumph.
