ASUU WARNS OF NATIONWIDE STRIKE OVER UNFULFILLED 2025 AGREEMENT

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has threatened to embark on a nationwide strike over what it described as the Federal Government’s failure to implement key provisions contained in the 2025 agreement reached with the union. The development has raised fresh concerns over the possibility of another disruption to academic activities in public universities across Nigeria.

ASUU said several issues contained in the agreement remain unresolved despite previous engagements with the government. The union has continued to demand action on matters affecting the welfare of university lecturers, funding of public universities and other conditions agreed upon during negotiations.

The latest warning has renewed concerns among students and university authorities, particularly given the history of prolonged industrial actions by ASUU over disagreements with successive governments. The union has repeatedly argued that failure to honour agreements contributes to instability in the university system and makes it difficult for institutions to provide quality education.

The Federal Government, however, has disputed some of the union’s claims regarding the implementation of the 2025 agreement. Education Minister Maruf Alausa has previously rejected allegations that the government failed to implement the agreement, indicating that the administration has taken steps to address issues raised by the lecturers.

ASUU’s latest position could therefore put additional pressure on both sides to return to negotiations and resolve the outstanding matters before they escalate into industrial action. A nationwide strike would affect students and academic activities in public universities, making efforts to reach an agreement and prevent another disruption increasingly important.
