Atiku Raises Alarm Over Rivers LG Election Conducted by Sole Administrator

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has strongly criticised the plan to conduct local government elections in Rivers State under the supervision of a Sole Administrator, describing the move as unconstitutional and dangerous for Nigeria’s democracy.

The Sole Administrator in question, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd), was appointed to oversee the state’s local government system.

However, the decision has attracted widespread condemnation, with prominent figures, including elder statesman Atedo Peterside, warning that such a process could undermine democratic principles.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, Atiku said the situation poses risks beyond Rivers State.

“It is in one’s interest to help put out the fire in your neighbour’s house to safeguard against your house being torched,” Atiku wrote.
“I agree that what is playing out in Rivers State, with an illegal sole administrator, unknown to our constitution, conducting council elections, has implications for the rest of the country. I join other men and women of goodwill to condemn this absurdity unequivocally.”

Atiku’s remarks come amid growing public outcry, with critics urging President Bola Tinubu’s administration to intervene and ensure that the upcoming council elections are conducted in line with constitutional provisions.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
