ATIKU SLAMS TINUBU’S COMPARISON OF NIGERIA, KENYA FUEL PRICES

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticised Bola Tinubu over his comparison of Nigeria’s fuel prices with those of other African countries, saying it does not reflect the true economic hardship faced by Nigerians.

In a statement issued by his aide, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku argued that focusing solely on petrol prices ignores more important factors such as income levels, purchasing power, and cost of living.

The criticism followed remarks by Bola Tinubu during a visit to Bayelsa State, where he said Nigerians should appreciate that fuel prices remain lower than in countries like Kenya.

Responding, Atiku Abubakar described the comparison as misleading, insisting that Nigeria is more expensive to live in despite relatively lower fuel prices.

He highlighted disparities in earnings, noting that average income levels in Kenya are significantly higher than in Nigeria, making it easier for citizens there to cope with higher fuel costs.

According to him, affordability should be measured by the relationship between income and expenditure, not just the price of commodities.

He further criticised Nigeria’s wage structure and rising cost of living, warning that current economic conditions have placed increasing pressure on citizens.

Atiku concluded that relying on selective comparisons risks portraying the government as disconnected from the realities faced by ordinary Nigerians.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
