Former Delta State Governor and 2023 vice-presidential candidate, Ifeanyi Okowa, has officially joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), revealing that he regrets accepting to run alongside former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Okowa said his decision during the 2023 general election went against the sentiments of his people, who were not in support of another northerner emerging as president. He added that for the sake of national stability, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should be allowed to complete a full eight-year tenure before power returns to the North.

Reacting to Okowa’s defection, Atiku Abubakar said he bears no grudge and respects his former running mate’s decision. In a statement released through his media aide, Paul Ibe, Atiku emphasized his belief in democratic values, particularly the right to freedom of association. He stated that it is undemocratic to begrudge anyone for choosing where they wish to belong politically. Atiku reaffirmed his loyalty to the PDP and dismissed ongoing speculations about him planning to defect, insisting he remains committed to the party.

The development signals further shifts in Nigeria’s political landscape as attention turns to the 2027 general elections. Okowa’s move is seen by political observers as a strategic alignment with the current administration and an attempt to remain politically relevant, especially in light of his recent support for a Southern presidency. The defection also reflects the growing influence of regional interests in shaping national politics, particularly on the issues of zoning and power rotation. As party alignments evolve, the political terrain is expected to become more competitive in the coming years.
