AU CONVENES EMERGENCY MEETING ON SOMALIA MISSION FOLLOWING US FUNDING CUT
The African Union (AU) has convened an emergency meeting of member states to address the future of its peacekeeping mission in Somalia after the United States announced a significant cut in funding.
The discussions, held in Addis Ababa, focused on alternative financing mechanisms, troop contributions, and strategies to ensure the continued stability of Somalia amid ongoing security challenges. AU Commission Chairperson, Mr. Moussa Faki Mahamat, stressed the importance of African-led solutions and solidarity. “We must find sustainable ways to support our brothers and sisters in Somalia,” he said.
The US funding reduction has raised concerns about the operational capacity of the AU Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS). Several African countries have pledged additional support, but gaps remain.
Participants called for increased contributions from AU member states and exploration of new partnerships with international donors. The meeting is expected to produce a roadmap for the mission’s future.
The situation underscores the challenges of funding regional peace operations and the need for greater self-reliance in African security matters.
