AVIATION UNIONS SUSPEND STRIKE FOLLOWING PROMISING NEGOTIATION PROGRESS
Unions representing workers in the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) have suspended their planned industrial action, citing encouraging progress in ongoing negotiations for improved wages.
Earlier in the week, the coalition of unions had instructed NAMA staff to begin an indefinite withdrawal of services starting Monday, August 11, over unresolved concerns regarding salary adjustments.
However, a new directive has now postponed the planned strike. According to the unions, this decision follows recent positive developments, including the issuance of a “no objection” letter from the Budget Office to the National Incomes, Salaries and Wages Commission, as well as assurances from NAMA management to commence payment of the revised remuneration with August salaries.
The announcement was made in a joint statement released Friday by union leaders such as AbdulRasaq Saidu, Secretary General of the Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals; Odinaka Igbokwe, Deputy General Secretary of the National Union of Air Transport Employees; Frances Akinjole, Principal Deputy General Secretary of the Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria; and Alo Lawrence, General Secretary of the Amalgamated Union of Public Corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees.
The statement read:
“Yesterday, we were compelled by unfavorable circumstances surrounding our pursuit of improved remuneration to reaffirm our earlier notice of service withdrawal, setting Monday, August 11, 2025, as the date to begin the action.
“However, due to the diligent efforts of NAMA’s management and the intervention of the Honourable Minister of Aviation and other senior ministry officials, we are pleased to note significant progress on the issue.
“We acknowledge the release of the ‘no objection’ letter from the Budget Office to the National Incomes, Salaries and Wages Commission on August 7, 2025, and the communication from NAMA’s management to staff outlining their commitment to ensuring the new salaries are paid alongside August wages.
“In view of these developments and to show our goodwill, our unions have resolved to defer the strike scheduled to begin on August 11, 2025, pending a review of the situation at the end of August.”
The unions urged all NAMA staff to remain watchful and hopeful as the situation continues to unfold.
