The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has announced that electricity consumers under the Band A tariff category will be eligible for compensation where power supply falls below the required standard in Nigeria.

According to the commission, the move is part of efforts to enforce service-based tariffs and ensure that distribution companies meet agreed minimum electricity supply levels to customers.

NERC said that Band A customers, who are expected to receive at least 20 hours of electricity daily, will be entitled to refunds or credits where providers fail to meet the threshold.

The regulator explained that the policy is designed to improve accountability in the power sector and compel distribution companies to deliver more reliable electricity services.

It added that complaints mechanisms have been strengthened to allow consumers report service shortfalls and trigger appropriate compensation procedures.

Energy experts say the development could increase pressure on distribution companies but may also improve service delivery if properly enforced.

The commission reaffirmed its commitment to protecting consumers while ensuring compliance with performance standards across the electricity supply chain.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
