In a compassionate move to tackle poverty and reduce prostitution, the Bauchi State Shariah Commission has empowered over 570 former commercial sex workers with vocational training and start-up capital to begin new lives.

This was disclosed by the Commission’s Permanent Commissioner, Barr. Aminu Balarabe Isa, during an interview with journalists in his office. According to him, the programme focuses on rehabilitation rather than punishment, in line with Islamic principles.

“These women, whom we now refer to as ‘women of free virtues’, were not forced into prostitution by choice, but by poverty and the need to survive,” Isa said. “Instead of pushing them into marriage, we decided to help them become self-reliant through skills and capital.”

The women were trained in various trades such as tailoring, hairdressing, makeup artistry, and other small businesses. After completing the programme, they were given start-up funds to launch their own ventures and break free from a life of dependence and exploitation.

Barr. Isa explained that the initiative is part of the Shariah Commission’s broader mission to reintegrate vulnerable women into society in a dignified and sustainable way. He also noted that the approach has drawn praise from religious leaders, community stakeholders, and social advocates across the state.

The programme marks a positive shift in social intervention strategy, moving from condemnation to compassion—and from punishment to empowerment. By addressing the root causes of prostitution, especially poverty, the Commission is offering real hope and a second chance to many women.

Residents and observers have applauded the effort as a step in the right direction, with hopes that similar programmes will be adopted in other states.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
