BENNI MCCARTHY REFLECTS ON NIGERIA–SOUTH AFRICA FOOTBALL RIVALRY: “WE USED TO BE CLOSE”
Former South African striker and football legend Benni McCarthy has shared his thoughts on the growing tension between Nigeria and South Africa in football, describing the rivalry as “unwanted” and far from what it used to be.
Speaking in an interview with SportyTV, McCarthy recalled a time when both nations enjoyed a warm, supportive relationship—both on and off the pitch. His comments come on the heels of the latest clash between the two teams in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, where Nigeria and South Africa battled to a 1–1 draw.
McCarthy expressed concern over the hostility that now surrounds the fixture, noting that competition should not replace unity within the continent.
“I don’t know what’s this unwanted rivalry between South Africa and Nigeria. We used to be very close. We used to be supportive,” he said.
He went on to highlight his pan-African mindset, emphasizing that his support extends to any team representing the continent.
“For me, I support everything Africa. I’m South African, but if I see anything African, I support because it’s my continent. I am proud of that.”
According to McCarthy, healthy rivalry should only exist within the 90 minutes of a match, not beyond. After the final whistle, he believes players and fans should return to unity and mutual respect.
“I understand when we play against each other, when there is a rivalry on the day of the match, but after the game we embrace each other because we’re Africans.”
McCarthy’s message serves as a reminder that while football can ignite passion, it should also strengthen brotherhood across Africa—not divide it.
